Teaching second-language English writing: Theoretical perspectives and practical approaches
This course is targeted at those who are interested in the theoretical perspectives and practical approaches for teaching or tutoring second-language English writing. In the first part of the course, we will look at various pedagogies, ranging from basic writing and rhetorical pedagogies to critical pedagogy and writing across the curriculum. We will also examine classroom dynamics and consider how to strive for equity in teaching contexts. In the second part of the course, we will look at practical approaches of teaching second-language English writing and practise our methods in class. Students should expect to develop their own teaching philosophy and receive feedback on their methods.
This class will be taught in English, and it will be the main language used by all members of the class. But those who might teach second-language English writing in a language other than English could choose to use another language in practical hands-on activities, provided there are other classmates who can use the same language.
