歴史・地域研究特論I
Between the history and story of Korean ethnic minority in Japan
● History
The aim of this class for the first half of the semester is to understand the history of Korean ethnic minority in Japan. It will focus on (1) the history of immigration history in Japan in the 20th century, (2) the process of becoming ethnic minority in Japan, (3) the issues facing Korean ethnic minority today, including the hate speeches towards Korean ethnic minorities (also known as "Zainichi Koreans") in the 2000s to 2010s. By learning the historical and contemporary issues facing Korean ethnic minorities in Japan, this class will deepen the understanding on the logics that differentiate Japanese and non-Japanese.
● Story
The aim of this class for the second half of the semester is to understand how the history of Korean ethnic minority in Japan is told in the film and novel of domestic and global context. The class will read Min Jin Lee’s novel "Pachinko" (2017), which traces the life of a Zainichi Korean family through generations and understand how the experiences of Korean ethnic minority in Japan (especially women) is constructed/reconstructed in English texts. Then this class will watch the film on Zainichi Koreans, made in Japan and compare the ways in which Zainichi Koreans are consumed in different context.
