日本近現代史

グローバルヒストリーとしての日本近現代史/Modern Japanese History as Global History
This seminar course is designed to help students cultivate analytical lenses through which to view the multifaceted state of contemporary Japan in historical terms. The intention is not to provide an exhaustive overview of Japan’s historical path but to equip the registered students with key concepts, ideas, and themes, such as Orientalism, modernization, nation/empire-building, colonialism, imperialism, trans-Pacific racism, gender, war, “base Okinawa,” the Japan-U.S. security system, Cold War Japan, the Anpo, post-Anpo Japan, and a wide range of social activism in postwar and contemporary Japan. Background knowledge of Japanese history can be helpful, but it is not required to attend the course. The chief objective of this course throughout the semester is to observe and discuss the trajectory of modern Japan from a global perspective and learn how to historicize its present for the globe’s better future.

授業計画
The course begins with the question of how to think historically and conceptualize Japanese history through the lens of global history. Building on this question and the analytical framework introduced in the first class, we will trace modern Japan’s trajectory roughly from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. Students will develop a chronological understanding of modern Japan based on class materials that provide historical contexts and key questions. All classes, including the first one, will be held in person.
授業の方法
Usually, classes will consist of a lecture, a video or students’ short presentations on reading assignments (depending on the day), and discussions. Reading assignments (all written in English) will be provided in class. Students are required to give a short presentation on reading assignments (for example, a summary of war survivors’ testimonies) at least once during the semester. The point is to make the class interactive and help each other nurture a global understanding of modern Japan. After each 90-minute class, students will submit a short reflection paper, which will be included in participation points (30 percent of the grade). Another assignment will be a final paper; questions will be announced in class.
