The Formation of the Cultural Property System in Colonial Korea
In this lecture, students will study the historical formation process of the cultural property protection system in colonial Korea. Following the enactment of Japan’s National Treasures Preservation Law in 1929, the necessity of a new cultural properties preservation law likewise came to be recognized in colonial Korea. In 1933, based on the “Law for the Preservation of Historic Monuments, Scenic Spots and Natural Monuments” in Japan's mainland and the “Law for the Preservation of National Treasures,” the “Order for the Preservation of Korean Treasures, Historic Monuments, Scenic Spots and Natural Monuments” was promulgated. Colonial Korea can be said to have been the starting point for the protection of cultural properties such as treasures and buildings, and has important historical significance in the study of conservation history. During this period, laws, regulations, and mechanisms related to conservation were also created for the first time, and repair work for conservation began. Detailed guidelines for repair work, repair principles, and repair techniques were introduced and established. Surveying was also conducted, and the techniques and characteristics of traditional Korean architecture were clarified. The systems and techniques formed during this period were utilized in the repair work that resumed in the 1960s, and formed the basis for the current repair work on Korean buildings. In this class, we will learn about the historical process and significance of the cultural property system in colonial Korea, and explore the actual policies of the Korean Governor-General at the time.
