東南アジア地域研究演習

世界の大半を占める、グローバルサウスにおける歴史学を概観する。主には、教員本人の専門である東南アジアの歴史学が対象になるが、一応はインド、アフリカの歴史学も対象とし、英語のテキスト（または日本語訳）を読んでいく。歴史家ごとの読解が基本になる。前提としては、アーカイブス等の一次資料の保存場所が十分になく、また二次資料、特に学術書が十分に刊行されず、または流通しない状況で歴史を書く、読む、学ぶという営為が成立する必要がある。つまり、歴史学の前提となる実証が難しい状況で、過去についての学知がいかにして可能なのかを問うことになる。広くは、ポストコロニアル思潮の授業だが、植民地官僚による歴史研究にも目を配り、往々に見られる文学ではなく、主には歴史学に基づいた考察を行う。グローバルサウスにおける困難とともに、歴史学の方法論そのものを考察することになる。

This overview course covers the study of history in the Global South, which constitutes the majority of the world's population. The primary focus will be on the history of Southeast Asia, the instructor's area of expertise, but it will also include the histories of India and Africa. Students will read English texts (or Japanese translations) and engage in analysis of each historian's work.

History of Global South relies on the presumption that the practice of writing, reading, and studying history is feasible even in situations where there are insufficient archives or primary sources and where secondary sources, particularly academic books, are not adequately published or circulated. In other words, the course will explore how historical knowledge is possible under conditions where the empirical foundations of historiography are difficult to establish.

While broadly being a course on postcolonial thought, it mainly involves analysis based on historiography, not litrature, as it will also pay attention to historical research conducted by colonial bureaucrats. Along with examining the challenges faced in the Global South, the course will also reflect on the methodologies of historiography itself.
