特殊講義IV[アジア・日本研究コース]
This course is on 'Refugee and Forced Migration Studies'.
This course will be conducted entirely in English.
The instructor is Associate Professor at Hitotsubashi University and specialises in refugee/forced migration issues and asylum / migration policy. Her disciplinary background is in Law, International Relations, and Politics.
Prior to joining academia, the instructor worked as a national and international civil servant for the
Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japanese Immigration Bureau (as an external expert), the United
Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and International Organization for Migration (IOM),
among other institutes in various countries for about 15 years.
This course is to introduce students to overview, theories, disciplines, and contemporary debates concerning refugee and forced migration studies. It aims at helping students to familiarise themselves with different approaches to study refugee and forced migration phenomena in the world and to be able to conduct critical analysis of some of the key aspects of current forced migration issues.
The course goals are:
- To be introduced to basic theories, disciplines, and contemporary debates concerning refugee and forced migration studies;
- To become familiar with the different approaches to study refugee and forced migration phenomena in the world;
- To be able to conduct cricial analysis of some of the key aspects of current forced migration issues.

(including human rights violation, conflict, environment, disasters, development, etc.)

(including “voluntary” repatriation, local integration, resettlement, burden-sharing)

授業の方法
The instructor will assign a couple of required articles every week and students are to finish reading them before the start of each class.
The instructor will deliver a lecture for each class.
Students are to ask questions and join discussions actively during classes.
成績評価方法
Class participation (active engagement with discussions and asking questions): 40%
End of the term paper: 60% (either in the form of an essay or an exam)

履修上の注意
- The entire course will be conducted in English only.
- There will be required readings every week, and thus this course is suitable for students who are seriously
willing to learn the contemporary forced migration issues and how to approach them.
- Active discussions in the class and asking questions are required and assessed.
- The term paper will weigh 60% of the grade, and thus this course is suitable for students already familiar with the basics of writing academic papers in English.
The paper assigned at the end of the term will be either an essay or an examination (TBC).
