Migration in Britain and Italy
Migration is a highly contentious political issue in Europe and this course will focus on Europe's post-war migration history to help explain why this is the case. The course will outline the main theories adopted to analyze migration and will examine the policies used to govern the phenomenon. In its focus on Britain and Italy, the course will explore how European approaches to migration have changed in recent decades. Britain will be used as an example of early post-war approaches to labour migration while Italy will be used as an example of a 'late-comer' immigration country. At the end of the course, students will be familiar with conceptual issues regarding labour migration and will be able to analyze and understand the social, cultural and political implications of labour migration in both Britain and Italy.
