The psycholinguistics of 2nd language comprehension, production, and acquisition

Overview: This course will focus on the issue of 2nd language acquisition from the point of view of the psycholinguistics of 2nd language comprehension, production, and acquisition, with the goal of using psycholinguistic considerations to inform classroom practices.

The exact topics covered, as well as their sequence, will be determined by the development of the discussions in class, but the following topics are representative of the issues that are likely to be discussed: •critical period(s) for language acquisition •implicit vs explicit knowledge of language •automatic vs attentional processing of language •assessing language knowledge •aptitude and motivation •L2 acquisition of phonology •L2 acquisition of word/multi-word units •L2 acquisition of grammar •L2 acquisition of discourse structure •acquisition of second language writing

The class will be a combination of lecture, in-class discussion, and student presentations.
