Phonological theory
音韻論
音韻論は自然言語の音の文法である。この授業では、音韻論の自然言語に見られる音韻パターンを学ぶとともに、理論を用いて分析する。（調音）音声学を、IPA音のトレーニングとともに概観したあと、音素、音韻交替、プロソディー、統語論と音韻論のインターフェースを扱い、データ分析も行う。
授業の目標は以下である。
- 音韻論のコンセプトを理解する
- 音韻プロセスを理論を用いて分析できるようになる
- 言語学の問題解決の方法を身につける
Phonology concerns sound patterns in natural languages. This course will discuss the nature and organization of phonological systems in natural languages, providing an overview of fundamental concepts and theory in phonology. It will cover a wide range of topics, including segmental alternations, suprasegmental phenomena, and interactions of phonology with other modules of grammar such as morphology and syntax. There will be a component of practical data analysis. We will begin with (articulatory) phonetics including training of the IPA sounds.
By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to:
- understand the basic phonological concepts
- analyze phonological processes in the theoretical frameworks discussed in the course
- develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills

授業の方法
The leture provides the basic concepts of phonology. Homework exercises will give students opportunity to analyze data, which will be discussed in the class as well. There will be a quiz on IPA sounds, midterm test and the final exam.
The course will be conducted mainly in Japanese. 授業では日本語を使用します。
成績評価方法
Participation: 10%
Homework exercises: 30%
IPA quiz: 15%
Midterm test: 20%
Final exam: 25%

There are no required textbooks in the course. Readings will be provided as needed.

There are no prerequisites for this course. However, students are expected to have basic knowledge of phonetics and general linguistics.
