テクスト分析による「史的言語感覚」の養成
Fostering a historical linguistic sense through an analysis of texts
英語における「ことばと文学」の歴史的変遷を体験する機会を提供したいと思い、本科目をデザインしました。
本科目では、1500年以上に及ぶ英語の歴史において残されてきた様々な文献を読み解くことで、英語の通時的な変化や当該時代における諸特徴に対する感覚（＝史的言語感覚）、および、英語を対象とした史的言語研究の基礎力を養成します。毎週1種類以上のテクストを分析しますが、最も馴染みがある現代英語を起点として徐々に時代を遡っていき、最終的には古英語まで到達します。現代から徐々に遠ざかることで、現代英語を相対的に捉えることを試みます。関連する最新の研究成果についても随時紹介したいと思います。
「授業計画」にあるとおり、時代とジャンルをできるだけバランスよく読んでいきます。言語科学の科目群で開講されていますが、英文学史の一種としてもぜひ楽しんでください。
I designed this course to offer an opportunity to experience historical changes in English language and literature.
We will read various texts produced in more than 1,500 years of English, thereby fostering a sense of diachronic changes in the language and features relevant to a specific period. A further aim is to develop fundamental research skills in English historical linguistics and philology. We will analyse one or more text per week, starting from the most familiar Present-day English and gradually going back to earlier periods, ultimately to Old English. Through this reverse chronological approach, we will try to take a relative view of English today. Recent research outcomes will be introduced whenever possible.
As you can see in 'Schedule', we hope to have a fine coverage of periods and genres. The course belongs to the Language Sciences programme, but you are very welcome to see it alternatively as the history of English literature.

授業の方法
担当者による指定テクストの発表（訳と分析）とクラス全体でのディスカッションの組み合わせが毎回の基本構成となります。疑問点等を持って教室に来てください。
Each class will consist of translations and analyses of the assigned texts and a class discussion. Please come to the classroom with questions etc.
成績評価方法
平常点／Class contribution： 45%
期末レポート／Final paper： 50%
期末レポート中間発表／Oral presentation of the final paper： 5%
平常点は、指定テクスト担当時の成果とディスカッションへの参加を総合的に考慮します。
Class contribution will consider students' performance in the translation and analysis of the assigned text as well as participation in discussion.
期末レポートの詳細は授業で説明します。今のところ、自分で決めたトピックに関するリサーチペーパーか、授業で扱わなかったテクストの分析のいずれかを考えています。
Details of the final paper will be announced in class. The tentative idea is either a research paper on the topic chosen by each student or an analysis of texts not covered in class.
期末レポート中間発表は、期末レポートで評価を受ける前提となります。提出前に担当教員やクラスメイトから建設的なフィードバックを得る貴重な機会でもあります。授業で中間発表を行わない場合、期末レポートは原則採点の対象となりません。
Oral presentation of the final paper is a prerequisite to having the paper evaluated. This is also an invaluable opportunity for students to receive constructive feedback from the instructor and classmates before submitting the paper. In principle, the paper will not be marked if it is not presented in class.

履修上の注意
講義ではなく演習のため、受講者の皆さんの積極的な参加を期待します。担当するか否かに関わらず、予習を入念に行ってください。
This is a seminar, not a lecture, and active participation is critical. Irrespective of whether you are in charge of any text, you should read it thoroughly before the class.
担当者は指定テクストの発表（訳と分析）のためのハンドアウトを作成し、UTOLの掲示板にアップロードしてください。加えて、担当者を含む全員が、指定テクストに関するディスカッションに参加することが求められます。
Please prepare a handout of your presentation (translation and analysis of the assigned text) and upload it to UTOL's discussion board. Every participant should contribute to a class discussion about the text.
本科目はBYOD方針を採用します。ラップトップやiPadなど、個人のデバイスを毎回の授業に持参し、UTOLやオンライン・リソース（特にOED）に随時アクセスしてください。
This course will adopt a BYOD policy. Please bring your own device (e.g. laptop, iPad) to every class and access UTOL and online resources (especially OED) any time.

本科目は大学院の「言語科学基礎理論演習IV」を学部後期課程の皆さんも受講できるように今年度新たに設置されたものです。
This course was set up in AY2025 to allow senior division students to take the postgraduate course 'Seminar: Foundations of Language Science IV'.
英語史に関する知識は一切問いません。学年・学部・研究科を問わず、言語や語学全般が好きな方の受講を等しく歓迎します。現代以前の英語を通して現代英語を学び直すことの楽しさを体験してください。
No prior knowledge of the history of English is required. Students from any grade, department or school who love languages will all be warmly welcomed. Please enjoy relearning Present-day English through its previous stages.
