language diversity, language death, maintenance, revival, bilingualism, multilingualism in Japan and the world
To introduce issues of language diversity in society: national language & nationalism, official & local languages, bilingualism, identity, lingua franca, language death & revival, language endangerment, contact and language awareness.

Self-introduction. What is language in society? Interview classmates with checklist. Week 2. A Language Awareness Questionnaire. Interview classmates with questionnaire. Week 3-13 Chapters 1. Languages in society, language in daily life, pluricentrism, monocentrism, heteroglossia 2. The causes of multilingualism and language diversity 3. Multilingualism, myths, and controversies 4. People, language and dangerous things, language in towns and cities 5. Bilingualism, brain, people, code-switching 6. Politics and language 7. Identity and culture, Personal names, place names, language, and cultural theory 8. Lingua franca, hybrids, and constructed language 9. Language death, revival, endangered languages

成績評価方法
EVALUATION Attendance is taken. All participants must attend all classes. A participant is not permitted to do the mid-term report or final report unless they have attended 2/3 of classes. 1. Mid-term report. Hand on December 3rd by email attachment. Word. Not pdf. The report will be returned with comments. The report can also be revised and re-submitted, if you wish, (on January 21) for possible extra points. No further comments on your resubmission. Language Awareness RESEARCH QUESTIONNAIRE RESEARCH QUESTIONNAIRE. Make a new 2021 version of the Language Awareness Questionnaire. Make 10 questions. Japanese and English. The purpose of your questionnaire is to ascertain a person’s knowledge about language and society. Who are your target (students? children? general public?). You can use some of the old questions, delete some questions, rewrite some questions, use the same format or different format. Accompany your new ‘Language and Society Questionnaire’ (2021 version) with a 100 word (double-space) explanation of your questionnaire. 2. Final quiz of 20 questions taken from all chapters of the textbook (even if we do not finish all chapters in class). Some short factual questions, some longer discussion questions. Question paper handed out January 21. Take home. Email answers by midnight. January 22. Ms Word attachment only. No pdf.
