To introduce the fundamental issue of the diversity language use in society: in particular, national language and nationalism, official and local languages, language death and revival, language in contact, language endangerment, language awareness.

成績評価方法
Mid-term essay on a topic related to the course (length to be decided).
Final quiz of 20 short questions based on the textbook lectures.
The mid-term essay can also be re-submitted for extra points.
