Introduction to Linguistic Typology
Nowadays English is one of the languages used most commonly in the world, hence considered to be a "global" language. However, it is said that there are around 7,000 languages in the world, and each of them, including English and Japanese, of course, has its own interesting linguistic properties, or "beauty" and "mystery". The ultimate goal of this course is to relativize our view of language by looking at various linguistic properties of various languages. We will soon confirm that no language, including regional varieties, a.k.a. dialects, is "superior" or "inferior" to the others. We will also learn some basic linguistic concepts, which allow us to examine similarities between seemingly different languages and differences between apparently similar languages.
