Sociolinguistics: Mobility, contact, multiculturalism, language production, and language perception
This seminar aims to deepen students’ understanding of various linguistic phenomena arising from human mobility and language contact from a sociolinguistic perspective.
We will examine and discuss what kinds of phenomena have been reported to date, whether the methodologies used to investigate them can be considered appropriate, and what kinds of research are needed in the future. The communities and contexts to be considered include multicultural and multilingual immigrant communities in Japan (such as Zainichi Korean communities, Brazilian communities, and Spanish-speaking immigrants from Latin America), immigrant communities in London, Toronto, and Sydney, as well as Japan’s former colonies and territories (Taiwan, Karafuto, Sakhalin, Manchuria, and Micronesia).
The linguistic phenomena to be covered will include language contact, language shift, language obsolescence, mixed languages, the formation of ethnolects, code-switching, lexical borrowing, dialect contact, the emergence of new dialects, and language change, as well as language perception and people’s awareness, evaluations, and attitudes toward language.
The specific topics and scope of the seminar will be determined in consultation with the participants during the first class.
