Philosophical Problems of Consciousness
This course explores fundamental questions about consciousness, identity, and mind through philosophical thought experiments. Students will engage with classic imagined scenarios that reveal puzzles about subjective experience, intelligence, agency, and personal identity, and the arguments and debates associated with these scenarios. The goal is to develop tools for philosophical thinking and to appreciate why questions about consciousness remain challenging.

Topics will include: the nature of conscious experience, computational approaches to mind, questions of agency and moral status, and problems of personal identity. Specific readings and schedule to be announced in class.

Lecture and discussion format. Students engage with philosophical scenarios through class participation and written responses.

Assessment will be based on class participation and a final exam.
