America and the Fantastic
In this course, students will read works of fantasy fiction, particularly focusing on fantastic realism, and the political, cultural, and social issues it concerns itself in the U.S. Beginning with Tsvetan Todorov's and Rosemary Jackson's theories of the fantastic, we will study short fantasy fiction by American authors that function across the range of "fantasy types" from the marvelous to the uncanny and address a variety of topics, including weird fiction, monsters, high fantasy (imaginary kingdoms, dragons, etc.), fantastic realism, the influence of folklore, and more. Through discussions, presentations, and written work, students will focus on how to approach fantasy fiction from an interdisciplinary standpoint. We will also discuss the delivery method of contemporary fiction through both conventional media (books, TV) and relatively newer technologies (the Internet, social media).

授業の方法

履修上の注意
Policies on participation: Students are expected to come to class on time (via Zoom) and complete assignments on time (via UTOL and Google Sites). Students may use only conventional support to complete assignments, such as dictionaries. Students must NOT use AI for any reason during class or for assignments. In this course, students are graded on their active class participation, not attendance. Students who do not participate will not receive points for that day; repeatedly refusing to participate may result in failure of the course. Policies on absences: Students should report an absence for reasons of illness or technical difficulties and will receive an "excused" at the discretion of the professor (students should be prepared to offer some proof, such as a medical certificate or picture of the computer problem). However, students who miss more than 3 classes "unexcused" may not have sufficient points to pass the class. Moreover, missing 5 or more classes total, excused or unexcused, will result in failure of the course. Exceptions to these rules will be given on a case by case basis for diagnosed conditions and special cases adjudicated by the Kyomuka. Policies on language use: The language of instruction will be primarily English. But some discussion in Japanese will be allowed. Students should be prepared to read or write their assignments each week. Reports and other assignments should be completed in the student's own original English. Policies regarding reports and classwork: Students who do not complete and submit their final reports cannot pass this class. AI responses, copy-paste, and other forms of academic dishonesty will be penalized. Students who are caught plagiarizing will fail that assignment and may be offered the opportunity to rewrite. Students who use generative AI, AI grammar tools, and/or AI translation tools to complete their classwork or written assignments will fail that assignment, which may result in failure of the course. Students wishing to turn in a late assignment are required to notify the professor before the deadline has passed, except in cases of extreme emergencies that prevent such contact (in which case evidence will be required, such as proof of hospitalization). Late assignments that have been excused (for illness, disabilities, or technical problems) will be graded the same as on-time assignments. Late and unexcused assignments will be accepted for a passing grade. Students who turn in the wrong assignment for their final portfolio will receive a zero unless they send the correct version before the final grade deadlines. Students who turn in an assignment late without notifying the professor before the deadline will fail the assignment (if it is the final report, they will also fail the course).
その他
IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ: This course is taught entirely online. The assigned classroom is to be used like a computer laboratory. No in-person discussions will take place. Students may join from their home/room or the assigned classroom. Do not join from other locations. Students caught joining from noisy, chaotic places will be asked to move (to the assigned classroom) and will be penalized participation points for the day. Although the professor will not be in the classroom, students are expected to respect campus guidelines on virus prevention measures as well as respect their classmates. Some of the reading and video content for this class is subject to change, depending on the situation of copyright law and online teaching.
