Questions Concerning Technology
This course sets out to question common assumptions concerning technology. Questions that we may ask include: Does new technology enable democracy or impede it? Is technology opposed to nature or a part of it? Does technological advancement release us from the labor of work or is it used to discipline labor? Does technology threaten to make art obsolete or offer it new avenues of development? Drawing on key texts in continental philosophy and critical theory, this course introduces students to important theoretical considerations of technology's role in human life. Students successfully completing the class will come away with a fuller critical understanding of technology and its complex, often conflicted, place in human society. The length of the readings vary from week to week, but, on average, they amount to roughly 50 to 60 pages of material per session.

授業の方法
Texts explored in the class are located in or draw heavily from the traditions of continental philosophy and critical theory. Such texts are notoriously difficult. The class, which will be in a small seminar format, will utilize practices of close reading and discussion to arrive at fuller understandings of the texts and their claims. Students will need to spend considerable time with the texts in advance of class in order to be adequately prepared for each of the sessions. A comprehensive final examination, conducted at the end of the semester, will evaluate students’ understanding of key concepts and ideas introduced through the readings and class discussions surrounding them.
成績評価方法
Active and consistent contribution to class discussions (40%) and a comprehensive final examination (60%) given at the end of the semester.
履修上の注意
This class is designed as a small discussion-centered seminar. If the number of interested participants exceeds that framework, a lottery will be held to bring the number down to one conducive to the course’s design. In addition, students with an internship or other responsibility that will necessitate being absent from multiple classes are asked to refrain from taking this course.
