Strange Navigations: Towards a geography of folklore
This class introduces students to the study of folklore through a cultural (and literary) geographical perspective and explores the deep connection between landscape, spatial experience, and folklore. The first classes will be used to (further) develop a working knowledge of the interdisciplines of literary and cultural geography, before moving on to examine various examples of folklore from a geographical viewpoint. You will consider the use of geography in folklore writings and further examine the affective role of place in the production of folkloric narratives. The course is designed to help you think critically about the role of folklore writings as sources of geographical information. A number of short readings will provide opportunities for class discussion and will develop your comprehension of the texts being examined. Students will be expected to read excerpts, short stories and/or academic articles on a weekly basis in preparation for regular presentations and discussion of ideas. The class will be run as a Socratic circle with an emphasis placed on student engagement. *This class builds on the work conducted in the S Semester class "Literary Geographies of Folklore", but can be taken independently. No previous knowledge of folklore or cultural geography is required as these subjects will be introduced in the first few weeks of the course.
