Literature and Social Criticism: Reading Shirley Jackson
In this course, students will learn to read literature through the lens of social issues. Students will read several short stories by American author Shirley Jackson such as "The Lottery" and "Flower Garden" and examine theoretical, political, and historical contexts that underpin the stories. In addition to the stories, they will be introduced to social criticism and cultural theory on race and politics from the 1940s and 1950s. In their discussions, presentations, and written work, students will focus on how to approach literature from an interdisciplinary standpoint, and how to deeply read a story for its context and multiple meanings.

We will talk also about the topic mentioned in the schedule. Discussions will take place out loud or in written format via Zoom and Google Documents. Written assignments (reports, writing assignments) will be assigned via the course Google Site and submitted to the ITC-LMS. 履修上の注意
Policies on participation: Students are expected to come to class on time (via Zoom) and complete assignments on time (via ITC-LMS and Google Sites). However, this pandemic is a continuing disaster. In this course, students are graded on their active class participation (not attendance) and consideration will be given for illness and technical problems. If students have some trouble, either with technology or in their lives, they should contact the professor as soon as possible to help avoid negative impacts to their grades. Policies on language use: The language of instruction will be primarily English. But some discussion in Japanese will be allowed. Students should be prepared to read or write their assignments each week. Reports and other assignments should be completed in English. Policies regarding reports: Students who do not complete their final report cannot pass this class. Students who miss more than 3 classes without an excused absence (determined by the professor and/or university) may not have sufficient points to pass the class. Late assignments that have been excused (*for illness or technical problems, especially COVID19) will be graded the same as on-time assignments. Late and unexcused assignments will be graded on a decreasing point scale by the number of weeks late. Unexcused lateness on may result in assignments receiving no credit after 3 weeks have passed from the deadline; unexcused and late final reports may not be graded if the deadline for final grades has passed. Students who turn in the wrong assignment for their final report will receive a zero unless they send the correct version before the final grade deadlines.
その他
IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ: This course is taught entirely online. A classroom is assigned and a TA will be present to help with any technical problems. However, the classroom is like a computer laboratory. No in-person discussions will take place. Some of the reading and video content for this class is subject to change, depending on the situation of copyright law and online teaching.
