Introduction to Creative Writing
This course provides an introduction to several types of creative writing: personal essays, short fiction (flash), and poetry in classic forms and free verse. No previous experience with creative writing is necessary to take this class, but students should come prepared to write their own work and provide feedback for their classmates in a supportive environment. Students wishing to expand their abilities in English beyond an academic or journalistic writing style, to learn how to play with synax and grammar, to increase their vocabulary, and to have some fun with language should consider taking this course. The professor will also provide information about publishing creative work in English (amateur and professional) and finding creative writing cohorts/groups to continue improving their writing beyond the limits of this course.

授業の方法
This course will be capped at 15 students to make sure every student gets individual attention for their writing from the instructor and their classmates; students wishing to sign up for the class should be sure to join on the first day of class in order to secure their place. This course will taught in English through several methods: short lectures by the professor, group discussions, criticism days (during which students and professor will discuss student work), and creative writing assignments (in-class and take-home). The focus of this course will be primarily on writing. Students are allowed to speak in English and/or Japanese during discussions, but all written work (in class and for homework) should be completed in the students' original English. AI use is forbidden in this class. Students are expected to join from a PC or tablet at home or from the assigned classroom on-campus that will have wifi (and computers). Students should not join the online class from other locations (e.g. public transportation or cafes, which will be distruptive to their learning and abilities to fully participate). The course will be taught live through Zoom and also use UTOL, Google Sites, and Google Documents. Class 1 will be a test class and explanation day. We also do an introductory activity to practice using our virtual classroom tools. Discussions will take place out loud and in written format via Zoom and Google Documents. Writing and reading assignments will be assigned via the course Google Site and submitted to the UTOL. No prior knowledge of creative writing or literary studies is necessary to join this class, but students must be willing to participate actively and come prepared to class each time, as group discussions and criticism days depend upon students completing their work on time.

履修上の注意
Policies on participation: Students are expected to come to class on time (via Zoom) and complete assignments on time (via UTOL and Google Sites). Students may use only conventional support to complete assignments, such as dictionaries. Students may not use AI for any reason during class or for assignments. In this course, students are graded on their active class participation (not attendance). Policies on absences: Students should report an absence for reasons of illness or technical difficulties and will receive an "excused" at the discretion of the professor (students should be prepared to offer some proof, such as a medical certificate or picture of the computer problem). However, students who miss more than 3 classes "unexcused" may not have sufficient points to pass the class. Moreover, missing 5 or more classes total, excused or unexcused, will result in failure of the course. Exceptions to these rules will be given on a case by case basis for diagnosed conditions and special cases adjudicated by the Kyomuka. Policies on language use: The language of instruction will be primarily English. But some discussion in Japanese will be allowed. Students should be prepared to read or write their assignments each week. Reports and other assignments should be completed in English. Policies regarding reports and classwork: Students who do not complete and submit their final portfolios cannot pass this class. Students who are caught plagiarizing will fail that assignment and may be offered the opportunity to rewrite. Students who use generative AI, AI grammar tools, and/or AI translation tools to complete their classwork or written assignments will fail that assignment, which may result in failure of the course. Late assignments that have been excused (for illness, disabilities, or technical problems) will be graded the same as on-time assignments. Late and unexcused assignments will be graded on a decreasing point scale by the number of weeks late. Unexcused lateness on may result in assignments receiving no credit after 3 weeks have passed from the deadline; unexcused and late final portfolios may not be graded if the deadline for final grades has passed. Students who turn in the wrong assignment for their final portfolio will receive a zero unless they send the correct version before the final grade deadlines. Students who turn in an assignment late without notifying the professor may fail the assignment (if it is the final portfolio, they may fail the course this way).
その他
IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ: This course is taught entirely online. The assigned classroom is to be used like a computer laboratory. No in-person discussions will take place. Students may join from their home/room or the assigned classroom. Do not join from other locations. Students caught joining from noisy, chaotic places will be asked to move (to the assigned classroom) and will be penalized participation points for the day. Although the professor will not be in the classroom, students are expected to respect campus guidelines on virus prevention measures as well as respect their classmates. Some of the reading and video content for this class is subject to change, depending on the situation of copyright law and online teaching.
