Literary Geographies of Folklore
This class will examine folklore from literary and cultural geographical perspectives, using short stories and academic writings on folklore to form analyses of folkloric narratives and the places they aim to describe. You will consider the cultural and spatial workings of folklore and examine the affective role of place in the production of narrative. The class therefore aims to assess both the function of geography in the production of folklore and the role of folklore in the creating of place(s). The class will begin with introductions to the fields of literary geography and folklore before moving on to explore texts from key writers and folklore scholars (including Arthur Machen, Ithell Colquhoun, Jacqueline Simpson, Lafcadio Hearn and M.R. James). The course is designed to help you think critically about the uses of folklore writings and their connection to our surrounding geographies. A number of short readings will provide an opportunity to enable discussion and develop comprehension of the text itself. Students will be expected to read excerpts, short stories and/or academic articles on a weekly basis in preparation for regular presentations and the discussion of ideas. The class will be run as a Socratic circle with emphasis placed on student engagement.
