Political Economics
The course is an introduction to the topic of political economics. The course provides theoretical and empirical coverage of the application of economic analysis related to political behavior and political institutions. The objective of this course is to develop understandings of basic models of political economics and related empirical analysis.
This course is intended for students with an academic interest in political decision-making. It is aimed at those considering a career in research in political science or economics, but other students are welcome to attend.

授業計画
In the first half of the course we will cover material from the textbook [Persson & Tabellini 2000] according to the ability and interests of enrolled students, likely finishing about a third of the textbook. Outside of the textbook, we may cover Arrow's Impossibility Theorem and the Hotelling model of spatial competition.
The second half of the course will consider a variety of topics in political economics, including collective choice, voters, politicians, legislature, lobbying and media.

Lecture in English. Class participation is expected, either in English or Japanese.
成績評価方法
Final exam. The exam may be answered in either English or Japanese.
Class participation may be considered in the case of poor performance on the exam.

履修上の注意
No graduate course prerequisites. Calculus and basic concepts from undergraduate game theory (eg. backward induction) are used throughout the course. No experience with political science or political economy is required.

This course is taught jointly with Yasutora Watanabe. "Topics in Political Economics" is also taught jointly, and is focused on developing student research in political economics. Students interested in doing research in political economics are encouraged to enroll in both courses.
