Organic Chemistry I (GSC)

Organic Chemistry I (GSC)
This course is an introduction to the world of organic chemistry. In the simplest definition, organic chemistry is, "the chemistry of molecules containing carbon". However, it could also be described as the chemistry of life on Earth. Learning organic chemistry will provide you with a basic understanding of the properties, interactions, and reactivity of molecules containing carbon. Ultimately, you will learn how to use this understanding to create molecules that have never before existed. Such molecules could be new materials (e.g., eco-friendly plastics), new opto-electronic devices (e.g., OLED displays and solar cells), or new therapeutics (e.g., new drugs to treat cancer or Alzheimer’s disease). In this course, students will take their first step towards becoming experts in organic chemistry. This course covers chapters 1-13, 17, 21, 23, & 24 of the Mullins textbook, and possibly additional material if time allows.

履修上の注意
It is assumed that students would have a background of first-year college level general chemistry.. This course is designed to provide an opportunity for students to learn the board basics of organic chemistry. Please read chapter 1 of the textbook carefully. Organic chemistry is a notoriously difficult topic to master, so self-study is very important. When you are sitting in the classroom, it is easy to trick yourself into understanding more than you actually do. Note that if you continue to take organic chemistry in this Department, you will eventually cover all chapters of the Mullins textbook. Organic chemistry II will cover chapters 14-16 and 22, and Organic chemistry III will cover chapters (17) 18-20, and 25-27. Also note that, in the Mullins textbook, a non-traditional style of electron-pushing representation called "bouncing arrows" is introduced (at the end of chapter 7, pages 302-305). This style is a bit unconventional and some instructors may prefer that you use a more traditional style. Please ask you instructor about their preferences.
