[Objectives] In Geophysical Fluid Dynamics, we have learnt the physics applicable to both atmosphere and oceans. In this course, we put more emphasis on oceanic applications of GFD by learning the physics relevant to spatial scales of the ocean basins.
[Overview] Oceanic circulations at these length scales are characterised by (I) forcing (momentum, heat, and freshwater) exerted from the atmosphere through sea surface and (II) spatial boundary posed by impermeable topography. The gist of the relevant physics is condensed in the so-called "geostrophic adjustment problem". In the first part of the course, we consider this problem - how an ocean responds to the forcing exerted from the atmosphere. In the second part, we outline a number of ocean circulation theories which also incorporate the effect of bottom and side boundaries with the help of geostrophic adjustment concept.
