Learn the fundamentals of statistical mechanics concerning thermal equilibrium states.
The matter we observe is composed of an immense number of atoms and molecules, and the phenomena we see are nothing other than the collective properties of these atomic and molecular groups. Nevertheless, the macroscopic properties of matter cannot be immediately deduced from the laws governing its microscopic constituents, and the macroscopic world often exhibits diverse phenomena that are unimaginable from the laws of its microscopic components. So, how are the fundamental laws describing microscopic systems connected to those phenomena and laws at macroscopic scales? Understanding this relationship is the goal of statistical mechanics.
This lecture covers statistical mechanics for thermal equilibrium states, where the methodology is well-established, from fundamentals to basic applications. Assuming basic knowledge of quantum theory, we introduce equilibrium statistical mechanics using a modern and practical approach. We focus particularly on understanding its relationship with thermodynamics and enabling students to perform fundamental calculations. In the latter part, we apply equilibrium statistical mechanics to non-interacting many-particle quantum systems and discuss how differences in particle statistics manifest in macroscopic quantum systems.
