論文構成法

1. Understand the most typical ways of structuring computer science research papers, and the reasons for doing so.
2. Understand the need for a thesis (claim), and ways in which a thesis is developed.
3. Analyze published research papers and sections of papers to become familiar with their structure, rhetoric, and phrasing.
4. Learn some English phrases typical of the various sections of research papers.
5. Study poor examples that illustrate common errors.
6. Write or rewrite parts of research papers.

授業計画
The course starts in September 2021. Each class will cover roughly one chapter of the textbook, as follows: 1. Getting started 2. Getting organized 3. Paragraphs 4. Title 5. Abstract 6. Introduction 7. Methods and materials 8. Results 9. Discussion/Conclusions 10. Section headings, acknowledgments, references, figures, and tables 11. Nominalization 12. Consistency 13. Deixis 14. Editing
授業の方法
The instruction is completely in English. Students download copies of a textbook by the instructor containing all the course material. Each class, the instructor covers a section of the textbook, using PowerPoint slides. The material consists of explanations mixed with examples and exercises. The exercises are mainly written, but some involve discussion. Students are free to discuss their answers together, and the exercises are not graded. After each exercise, answers are elicited and discussed.
成績評価方法
Students will be required to submit a written assignment by the date of the final class. The topic of the assignment will be set by the instructor. Regular attendance is required in order to receive a credit.
