日本の言語への社会言語学的アプローチ／ Sociolinguistic Approaches to the Languages of Japan
What is Japanese Sociolinguistics?
This course is an overview of the significant sociolinguistic topics brought up in relation to Japan. We will discuss Japan's languages, monolingualism, multilingualism, language contact, code-switching, gender, politeness, and language policy.
We will also discuss the similarities and differences between approaches to the same topics outside and inside Japan.
At the end of this course, you will have a more detailed knowledge of sociolinguistics and its application to the context of Japan.
日本語社会言語学とは何ですか。
このコースでは、日本に関連して取り上げられる重要な社会言語学的テーマを概観します。日本の言語、モノリンガリズム、マルチリンガリズム、言語接触、コードスイッチ、ジェンダー、ポライトネス、言語政策などについて議論します。
また、同じテーマに対する日本と海外のアプローチの類似点と相違点についても議論します。
このコースの最後には、社会言語学のより詳しい知識と、日本の文脈への応用を身につけることができます。"

授業の方法
The main language of the class is English, discussions between students are possible in Japanese.
For each class students will read one main reading in English (within 25 pages).
During this course, we will have regular in-class discussions based on the homework readings and your ideas.
The mid-term assessment is a short presentation of student's ideas for the final essay. The final assessment is an essay on a topic related to the topics discussed in this course (approx. 2000-2500 words in English or 3500-4000 in Japanese).
授業の言語は英語ですが、学生同士のディスカッションは日本語でも可能です。
毎回の授業の宿題として、英語で書かれたリーディングを一つ読むことです。（25ページ以内）。
授業中、宿題のリーディングと各自のアイデアをもとに、クラス内で定期的にディスカッションを行います。
中間評価は、期末レポートに向けた生徒のアイデアの短い発表です。最終評価は、本講座で取り上げたトピックに関連したテーマについてのエッセイ（英語で約2000～2500語、日本語で約3500～4000語）です。
成績評価方法
Final essay 50%, Attendance 30%, Participation 20% 期末レポート５０％・出席３０％・授業への参加状況（中間発表・発言など）２０％
