Global Perspectives on Bioethics and Society

New biomedical advancements, such as gene therapy, regenerative medicine and stem cell technology, promise to transform healthcare over the coming years, but bring with them many challenges as policymakers are forced to consider competing ethical, scientific and commercial concerns. This course will explore some of the important current debates in this area from a predominantly social science perspective (although naturally, there will also be intersections with fields as diverse as philosophy, medicine, law and the humanities). Moreover, the course aims to place the discussion in a global context, exploring the historical, political and cultural reasons behind the variation in bioethical viewpoints around the world.

Introduction to Language, Gender, and Sexuality

This course will provide an introduction to the field of language, gender, and sexuality using approaches from sociolinguistics. In particular we will focus on how meanings related to gender and sexuality are reproduced in spoken and written discourse, for example in conversation and in the media. Topics will include the social construction of gender and sexuality, the linguistic resources people draw on to construct gender and sexual identities, questioning prominent gender/sexuality and language stereotypes, and the intersections between gender/sexuality and other social categories. There will also be a focus on language and gender/sexuality in the Japanese context. It is hoped that students will take from this course a heightened awareness of gender/sexuality related issues of power, inequality and agency and will be better equipped to articulate and explore questions in this area.

Translation Theory

This course introduces students to translation theory, sampling key texts from Eastern and Western traditions. We will begin by reading comparatively historic theories from various cultures, locating the specific praxes and social intentions of translation that influenced particular approaches and long-standing attitudes about translation, textual culture, and knowledge production. A good portion of the course will focus on theories of language and cultural transmission in order to prepare us for discussions of the seminal contemporary philosophies of Kwame Anthony Appiah (“Thick Translation”) and Lawrence Venuti (“An Ethic of Difference”).

Cells respond to external stimuli by inducing various signal transducing pathways, which lead to activation of gene expression, altered chromosome dynamics and internal metabolic state. These cellular responses are essential for maintaining the homeostasis of cells, tissues, organs and whole body, and failure in these systems results in various forms of diseases. This lecture series will focus on moluecular mechanisms and celluar machinery that serve for operation of varied cellular functions, and also on how diseases may be develped through their malfunction.
