This course is designed as an intensive cross-disciplinary doctoral workshop covering research design in transnational studies, especially in an Asian regional context. Research projects about transnational social and political processes are often faced with the challenge of how to track and analyze social processes as they reach beyond national boundaries. With a focus on transnational processes in the East/South-East Asian region, but open also to other global regional foci, the course will include a series of lectures by leading scholars in Asian Transnational Studies.

This course has three objectives below: 1. You will learn historical stages and various types of environmental issues from some case studies. 2.

Japanese Society and History

Our goal is to appreciate and understand the fact that what we talk about as Japanese culture and society are not unchanging ideas, doctrines, or institutions but have always been embedded in concrete human struggles both for political and social power and for making sense of human life. As such when you complete this course, you will have gained a deeper understanding of the process that gave rise to what is usually presented as the unique and essential Japanese culture and society from antholopological perspective. The course consists of a series of topics in Japanese society, particularly minority issues. For each class, we will read one or a few essays prior to class and I will then lecture on a topic, to be followed by class discussion on it. No prior knowledge of Japanese language or religions is necessary but you are required to be involved in the course, that is, you will do the reading, participate in class discussion, and conduct research for your final paper.

This survey course is designed to enable students to develop the broad perspective that is required of global leaders working in and across industry, academia, and government. Students will gain knowledge and insight on advancements in each field of materials science research, given by leading researchers working on the frontline in those fields. This will allow students to consider how peripheral fields are related to their own area of expertise, and to consider the potential for forging bridges between related fields in the future. In addition, students will learn specific methodologies designed to facilitate smooth communication among different disciplines.
