Research Design and Practice in Transnational and Global Studies

This course is designed as an intensive cross-disciplinary doctoral workshop covering research design in transnational studies, especially in an Asian regional context. Research projects about transnational social and political processes are often faced with the challenge of how to track and analyze social processes as they reach beyond national boundaries. With a focus on transnational processes in the East/South-East Asian region, but open also to other global regional foci, the course will include a series of lectures by leading scholars in Asian Transnational Studies.

Canvassing 20th century visual culture and its theory

In this course, we will read and discuss works on the theory and practice of visual culture in the 20th century, with a particular focus on the interplay between media, culture and society. While works on the United States will be the default focus, participants will be encouraged to think of the impact of globalization on media and society in various regions of the world.

Thu 6th

This survey course is designed to enable students to develop the broad perspective that is required of global leaders working in and across industry, academia, and government. Students will gain knowledge and insight on advancements in each field of materials science research, given by leading researchers working on the frontline in those fields. This will allow students to consider how peripheral fields are related to their own area of expertise, and to consider the potential for forging bridges between related fields in the future. In addition, students will learn specific methodologies designed to facilitate smooth communication among different disciplines.

Geochemistry

Aim: To outline the origin of the elements and their isotopes, their gross distribution throughout the Earth and the key processes controlling their partitioning with particular focus on fluid geochemistry. Overview: The course illustrates the importance of Geochemistry to global evolution of the Earth. The first half of the module teaches principles of geochemistry (solubility, redox, acids and bases, and carbonate equilibria). The second half of the module expands on the theory and discusses geochemistry is a broader planetary scale context (chemical weathering, geochemical cycles, Earth differentiation and evolution). Students will be taught using lectures with practical problem exercises.

Mathematical modeling

In this course, students will learn the fundamentals of mathematical modeling. A model is an idealized representation of the real world. Mathematical modeling is the process by which the complexity of real-world phenomena is simplified such that they can be described, more abstractly, in mathematical terms. The hope is that this abstraction of the real world can then help us understand the essence of the phenomena we wish to understand and/or predict. The concept of mathematical modeling is common to virtually all empirical sciences—not only natural and engineering sciences but also human sciences such as economics, psychology, sociology, etc. The lectures introduce three types of mathematical modeling strategies: optimization, modeling through dynamical systems (be they continuous, discrete or of cellular automaton-type), and probabilistic models. The introductory part starts with the concept of optimization and the mathematical methods needed to tackle such problems. The middle and main part explores the behaviour of both discrete and continuous dynamical systems. The focus will lie on stability analysis for such systems as well as on the relationship between discrete and continuous models (continuum limits and discretisation methods). In the last part (and if time permits), techniques for modeling probabilistic phenomena and stochastic processes as well as the concept of a Monte Carlo simulation will be introduced.

Purpose of this course is obtaining a solid understanding and some critical skills at five levels: 1. The theoretical dilemmas of global governance in the current age; 2. The ability to unpack the process of creating global governance (comparing different arenas) 3. The ability to develop a pathway to analyze and solve governance problems; 4. A better empirical understanding of the particular historical juncture of our current period in a larger comparative perspective with a focus on the interplay between the US, the EU, Japan, and large emerging powers (China, India, Brazil) among others. 5. And empirical knowledge on four issue areas: global finance, climate change, and biosafety from the perspective of global governance, and a changing balance of power

The course is intended to offer the opportunities of reading and presenting up-to-date research papers in the field of international trade. We put a special focus on global value chain (or global supply chain) this year. But students can also select papers to read from other areas of research within the field of international trade. The aim is to increase students' ability to conduct their own research.
