Introduction to Information Technology

This course is designed to help students who have no technical background to acquire basic knowledge, skills, and self-confidence which are necessary to live as a responsible citizen in this information age and to analyze modern Asian societies that are increasingly dependent on information and communication technologies. 総合分析情報学研究法1 Studies in Applied Computer Science I

本講義では、主に二つの内容を扱う。第一に、本コースが取り扱う主要な研究テーマである分析情報学に関連する分野の基本的な知識を講義する。第二に、本コースでこれから修士課程の勉強や研究をする上で必要とされる研究手法上のスキルを説明する。 This class will deal with two issues. First, this class lectures basic knowledge of ubiquitous computing-related research areas which is one of the most important research theme in this course. Cognitive Multi-media Processing

In this lecture, cognitive processing of multimedia information by human brains and technical processing of multimedia information on machines are explained and compared. Then, a focus is put on the fact that a large difference still remains between them. This lecture enables students to consider deeply what kind of information processing has to be implemented on machines if they want to create not seemingly but actually “human-like” robots, especially, the robots that can understand spoken language.

海洋情報学演習 Excersises on Ocean Information

「海洋情報学演習」は、様々な海洋情報の所在・形式・特徴、情報処理の基礎(統計・信号処理)から応用(高付加価値情報の作成)までを、6回の講義と6回の演習を通し学ぶことを目的とする。また、各学生は独自のテーマに従ったプロジェクトを実施し、口頭発表を行う。演習で用いるデータ、処理プログラムは講義時に配布またはインターネットを介して取得する。 The course covers a wide variety of topics that includes : whereabouts of ocean data, data formats, data description, fundamentals of data analyses (time series, multivariate, statistics and signal processing) and introduction to advanced data analyses methods (wavelet analysis, data assimilation). There will be twelve lectures which include six lab classes dedicated for exercise. The students are required to conduct their own data analysis project and give an oral presentation at the end of the course. We will provide datasets and analysis software as needed during the exercise or will ask the student to obtain them from the internet. All the lecture notes will be in English. Lectures are given in both English and Japanese.

The development and diffusion of science innovative technologies is indispensable for modern society. However, despite its benefits, the development of science and technology is not without various risks and social problems. So far as we are going to make societal decisions for the use of science and technologies with diverse social implications that encompass both risks and benefits, sometimes involving values implications, there is a need for mechanisms of decision making and management of the development and utilization of science and technology. Decisions can be different depending on environmental, institutional and cultural conditions. In addition, innovative policy instruments/ mechanisms to deal with rapidly changing science and technology, including regulatory measuesmeasures, are required for implementing decisions. This course will deal with wide range of issues from local to global levels faced at the interface areas between science, technology and public policy from comparative perspective of Japan, the US and Europe. It offers key theoretical issues surrounding Science and Technology and provides students with the tools and frameworks, such as risk assessment/ management and transition management, to analyze them. This course invites students from both natural science backgrounds (i.e. the graduate school of engineering, new frontier science and so on) and social science backgrounds (graduate school of public policy, law and politics, and economicsand public policy). We expect students to acquire interdisciplinary perspective in addition to their primary major, which is one of the critical skill in analyzing complex social technical issues posed by science and technology.

This exercise for Public Health Informatics focuses on the future of health informatics using R software and VR technology and provides practical knowledge and skills that investigators, research teams, informaticians, and administrators can use.
