Introduction to Information Technology

This course is designed to help students who have no technical background to acquire basic knowledge, skills, and self-confidence which are necessary to live as a responsible citizen in this information age and to analyze modern Asian societies that are increasingly dependent on information and communication technologies. Lectures will be accompanied by hands-on sessions.

Cognitive Multi-media Processing

In this lecture, cognitive processing of multimedia information by human brains and technical processing of multimedia information on machines are explained and compared. Then, a focus is put on the fact that a large difference still remains between them. This lecture enables students to consider deeply what kind of information processing has to be implemented on machines if they want to create not seemingly but actually “human-like” robots, especially, the robots that can understand spoken language.

本講義では、大量に蓄積された知識に対し、様々な構造化技術を用いて価値の創出を行う「知の構造化」を実践することを目的とする。知の構造化では、単なる検索にとどまらず、コンピュータを使って知識の抽出と分析を行い、分野や時勢を越えて各要素の間の関係を明らかにすることでその活用を促す。そのために、自然言語処理、人工知能、 Web工学等の最先端技術を駆使する手法を学び、実社会で生じる様々な課題に対する分野を超えた知の適用の議論を進める。これにより、構造の抽出と、構造から機能を導出するプロセスを体現する。

Whether or not the Anthropocene is officially accepted as Earth's new geological epoch, the phenomenon demands transformative human responses – but how to bridge the gap between the reality of global environmental governance and the requirements identified by natural and social scientists who have taken the condition of the earth system seriously? Drawing on complementary fields of knowledge (Critical Environmental Law, Governance studies, STS*), this course explores the implications of the Anthropocene narrative for global-scale governance and examines the emergence of innovative governance frameworks for dealing with global 'environmental' challenges such as human-induced climate change and other kinds of anthropogenic transformations of ecosystems. Through short interactive lectures, case studies, scenario analysis and role-play simulations, we will discuss a variety of regulatory frameworks, decision-making processes, institutional arrangements, and mechanisms, at the interface of science and policy. In so doing, we will engage in a critical examination of both the relevance and legitimacy of these emerging forms of governance in an era of planetary transformation and disruption. Overview: This course introduces students to the issues of security operations surrounding information system and internet communications in Japan and around the world, by focusing on security challenges arising from the globalization of internet, the sharing of networks, complex web of digital technology, and strategic communications. The course will enable students to understand how and why cybersecurity has drawn an increasing concern and driven the nation for development of strategies and policy at both national/international level. This course does not require significant skills or experience in information technology. Course Objectives The course objectives include but not limited to ● Understanding the policy issues that center on critical infrastructure protections, international relations, business continuity, and risk/crisis management to protect intellectual property, assets, reputation, and other organizational assets from any threat or attack related to cybersecurity. ● Understanding the role of technical standards to supplement legal and regulatory requirements; ● Analyzing critical incidents including data breaches or related events to design and implement organizational strategies to address such risks; ● Gaining a basic understanding for future technical and other research in security (whether it is public or public sector) ● Gaining a basic grounding for policy via the examination of current research issues and problems ● Gaining experience handling real-world security policy challenges through analysis of public documents and artifacts using written and oral communication. ● Developing the multidisciplinary skills needed to analyze, manage, and resolve the challenges associated with public policy, international relations, and governance. ● Students are encouraged to take experiment provided by Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies/Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies
