Cognitive Multi-media Processing

In this lecture, cognitive processing of multimedia information by human brains and technical processing of multimedia information on machines are explained and compared. Then, a focus is put on the fact that a large difference still remains between them. This lecture enables students to consider deeply what kind of information processing has to be implemented on machines if they want to create not seemingly but actually “human-like” robots, especially, the robots that can understand spoken language.

Applications of Sensing and Media Signal Processing

This lecture composes the basis in design and manufacturing course in mechanical engineering department, and offers the opportunity in extending knowledge in design and manufacturing by introducing the basis of processing of metallic and non-metallic materials. Advanced manufacturing process necessitates the detailed understanding of complicated behavior of materials during processing. The role of materials processing in design and manufacturing is presented, taking forming of metallic materials, forming of brittle materials and glass, and manufacturing of medical devices as representative examples.

Media Practice

□Course Goals: With the completion of this course, students will be able to: 1) comprehend the way of thinking in media studies and literacy which is interdisciplinary knowledge with a focus on media as an agent for communication, 2) bodily understand the history and theories of media studies and literacy, and 3) learn the necessary knowledge to design workshops as an academic method. □Course Description: This course consists of reading literature and image viewing ("Theory") and workshops ("Practice"). "Theory" will cover a wide range of topics including media history as a dynamism between information technology and the society, ideas and theories on media and communication, and media expressions and literacy necessary to cope with various problems associated with the contemporary media ecology in Japan. "Practice" will be opportunities for students to understand the above topics bodily by participating in and designing workshops as academic methodologies. Monday classes will be for reading literature ("Theory"), and Thursday classes for workshops ("Practice"). Those two streams will be integrated and crystallized as knowledge of critical media practice in the last part of the course.

There have developed quite separate debates concerning, on the one hand, the Transformation of Warfare, and Revolution in Military Affairs on the other. Conventional knowledge is that while the former approach encompasses a vast range of scholarly analysis on how war in the contemporary era might have transformed in all spheres of economy, politics and society, the latter has focused on the impact of technological advancement in a narrower sense on warfare, especially the way in which warfare has been conducted or ought to be conducted. However, to discuss changes in the character of war in these quite distinct spheres, each with specific preoccupations with no interactions, is not very conducive to a meaningful generalization about the transformation of warfare itself. The purpose of this seminar is to consider the impact of modern and contemporary technological changes, especially focusing on communication and media spheres, on the character and conduct of warfare today, hence bridging the two distinct spheres of interests.
