The Cultural Mind: An Introduction to Psychological Anthropology
This course examines the relationship between the individual and culture through the lens of psychological anthropology. Psychological Anthropology is the study of the interplay between psychology and culture using long-term fieldwork as a method. Classic and recent case studies will be reviewed, such as witchcraft among the Zande of Central Africa, gender in Samoa, psychological development in Japanese pre-schools, anxiety in contemporary Vietnam, the experience of disability in Thailand and Japan, Western Apache language and memory in the Southwestern United States, and regret among Irish former combatants. In addition to in-class participation, students will write short reflections on readings and conduct an ethnographic fieldwork project.
