In Week 1 - 3, the instructor will introduce key information to the class including triage, history of National Health Service in UK, quality-adjusted life year (QALY) and National Institute for Health and Care Excellent (NICE). Between Week 4 – 7, the class will focus on a case study of a child with an incurable disease which “might” be treated using an untested new approach. Students will debate rationale for or against the treatment. Through the case study, students will become familiar with the concept of the four pillars of health care principal (Autonomy, Beneficence, Non-maleficence and Justice). Students will be asked to produce a one-page executive summary of the case study including the background, timeline of key events and rationale of decision. During the second half of the semester, students will research resource issues in health care using a place/field of their choice, such as health care inequality in developed countries, COVID-19 vaccination provision in developing countries, and so on. Students will investigate the historical background and current issues. Students will then make a proposal for future direction using Justice as a guiding principle. Upon completion of the free-choice project, students will give an oral presentation using powerpoint and submit an 800-word report.
