The birth of modern science and its introduction to Japan (with related topics)
This course will discuss the birth of modern science in Europe and the role of western science and technology in the modernization of non-western countries by mainly focusing on the history of Japan from the late 19th century to the 1950s. The following will become the main issues: diversity of the concepts of science and learning; the birth of science in the 17th century and its dissemination in the non-western world; the relation between science and technology; science and technology at crises. Participants will have chances to examine their ways of understanding what science means for their culture, society, and lives.

授業計画
Introduction: 2-3 hours What is science? (Lecture and discussion): 4-6 hours The birth of science in 17th century Europe: 4-6 hours The dissemination of science, the case of modern Japan: 4-6 hours Some topics in the modern history of science in Japan: 2-4 hours Students' presentation: 4-6 hours On-campus excursion: 2 hours Note: All classes are planned to be given online. Accordingly, the details may change. Please be careful of further notices.
授業の方法
Lectures with discussion will be given in the first half (or first two thirds) of the semester. Students will be required to make presentations on the subjects related to the topics taken up in this course in the second half (or the last third) of the semester.
成績評価方法
One or two essays must be submitted; presentations during the course. The topics will be discussed and given during the course.
