授業計画
The course will be taught over 3 days, in 3x105 min per day (1.30 min of class+10-15 min break x 3). The 4th day will be dedicated to student presentations. The 5th day a visit either to the MoFA for an interview with an official, or to a place of interest, will be organized. 一日に105分ⅹ3回ⅹ4日間で、残りの105分として、残りの時間に外務省との面会か東京の興味深い所の訪問にしようと。 Topics Introductory class How do domestic politics lesser or increase influence on the international stage? 1.Foreign policy making and the workings of Democracy: how is foreign and defense policy produced? How does the population relate to it? To what extent do values influence foreign policy? 2.Elite formation and world views: how are diplomatic and political elites educated and how does this affect their world views? 3.Memory and politics in Asia and Europe: what is the difference between History, memory, and the political representation thereof? What are the current memory-related debates worldwide? How do States deal with others’ memories (internally or internationally)? 4.European foreign policies: How competent is the European Union in the field of foreign and defense policy and how does it interact with its Member states? How do France, Germany, the UK differ in their world visions? 5.Threat perception in Europe and Asia: what are Europe's main security interests and what are Asian states? To what extent to they overlap? 6.Dealing with China - Asian and European perspectives: how has the perception of China changed over the years in Europe? How different has it been in Asia? What are the options in dealing with China? What is Japan’s China policy? What is the EU’s Asia strategy? 7.Maritime security in Asia and for Europe: what is at stake for the world in the South China Sea and the Indo-Pacific? How does Japan and Europeans contribute to maritime security? 8.Indo-Pacific Geopolitics and alliances: how do the different “Indo-Pacific strategies” differ? How are alliances forming or shifting in the region? How central is the US? 9.Conclusion to the class: Prime minister Abe’s leadership and legacy.

Master-class/cooperative.
成績評価方法
Students will be asked: -to make one 15 min. oral presentation on a topic relevant to the class in English (40pc) and -to submit a 3000-word written essay on the same topic (60pc)
