Ethics and International Relations

This course intends to provide an overview of the main ethical questions arising within international politics, both in academic discussions in their historical evolution, and from the perspective of practitioners. It is designed for an audience of postgraduate students. Some background in International Relations theory is welcome, although not required. Ideally, students may take this course following my Introduction to International Politics. By the end of this course the student should have acquired a substantial knowledge of the main questions of ethics in International Relations, becoming familiar with the concepts and jargons of ethical theory, just war, ethics of war and warfare, responsibility to protect, human rights and global justice, issues of sustainable development and SGDs. The course will also provide some information about the cultural origin of some of these ethical-political issues through the lenses of political theology.

成績評価方法
The student’s performance is assessed with regard to attendance and in-class performance, the production of essays, and a presentation. 10% of the overall assessment is determined by evaluating the student’s degree and quality of participation in class activities, including attendance. 70% of the assessment is determined by two essays (each with a 35% weight) which the student will submit to the course leader in the weeks following lecture 9, and then shortly after the end of the course, respectively. Each essay should be about 1,500 word long and referenced. It should consist in the answer to a question chosen from a list which the course leader will circulate in advance. The course leader will announce the related deadlines during the course. 20% of the assessment is determined by a presentation held by the student on an ethical question occurring in the international political domain. It could be either related to the presentation of a particular theoretical work or theory, or a case study. The topic should be previously agreed with the course leader.

Students should actively engage in class discussion, as this is a core part of the training in political disciplines, not only in order to potentiate the student’s knowledge of the various subjects, but to enhance his/her ability to communicate complex ideas in an effective way. Please come to class on time.
