Introduction to Japanese Law

Introduction to Japanese Law
This course will help students understand the fundamentals of law in contemporary Japan. Students will emerge with at least a foundational understanding of key concepts in Japanese law, both in isolation and in their social context. Students will learn critically to discuss strengths and weaknesses of various areas of Japanese law, and offer comparisons with other systems where appropriate. The course assumes no knowledge of Japanese law, or law in general.

授業の方法
The class will be conducted in an interactive manner, It will consist of a mix of lecture and class discussion focused on the assigned reading materials, along with a few debates and other team exercises.
成績評価方法
Class participation (20%); a short (5-8 page) report due in early December (20%); a long research paper (15-20 page) due in mid-January (60%).

Sections from Hiroshi Oda, Japanese Law; Milhaupt, Ramseyer and West, The Japanese Legal System: Cases, Codes and Commentary; and other materials. To be provided and distributed online.

履修上の注意
The course will be conducted entirely in English. A good level of spoken and written English is required to perform well in this course.
