Science, Technology, and Society in the Information Age
The mathematical concept of information can be found all across disciplines of science and philosophy, because of its invaluable property to retain all its properties regardless of the media where it is instantiated. This extraordinary substrate independence and interoperability are what made possible all symbolic representations, from the genetic code, which allowed for life to develop upon it, to human cognitive capabilities including language, science, and all technological inventions which led to the modern society.

This course aims at providing students with a fundamental understanding of information systems, which plays an essential role in our modern life, in the middle of a rapidly transforming society. Students will not only acquire basic knowledge of information technology but also study human and social aspects of information through lectures and exercises.

Topics include:
- information related to humanities: representation, cognition, and communication - information's relation to society: roles of information systems, legal aspects, and technologies in society,
- information related to solving problems: data models, algorithms, and computational complexity and how they are interconnected,
- nature of information: what is information, philosophical and mathematical bases to the concept of information, specificity of information in living systems and human cognition.

授業計画
This is the plan of the course. Specific details might vary from year to year, and will be communicated during the course. Materials will be shared as the course progresses. 0. Introduction to information: why information science, bird’s-eye view of the course, group projects, introduction to information basics 1. Computer software 101: Software (Rich text editor), scripts (Shell), programming (Python), math (R), plots (Gnuplot), editing (Latex) 2. Representations of information: Relations, sets, graphs, data structures, language, symbols and meaning 3. Algorithms: Finite state automata, Turing machines, algorithms, programming strategies, computational complexity 4. Human-machine interfaces: User interfaces, encodings, keyboards, screens, virtual and augmented reality, robotics 5. What is information: Information, coding theory, Shannon entropy, mutual information, cryptography 6. How to make a robot: Electronics, memory storage, processors, embodiment, unconventional computing, robot society 7. Artificial intelligence: Machine learning, Turing test, human-level AI, evolutionary computation, neural networks 8. Information technology and society: Technology impact on society, intellectual property, privacy and security, scientific method, epidemic models, e-democracy, AI and information ethics 9. Artificial life: Synthetic biology, artificial consciousness, cellular automata, artificial chemistry, physics of intelligence, futurism 10. Wrap-up: synthesis, Q&A, information in one’s life, education, and career
授業の方法
This course consists of interactive lectures, practical assignments, a group project, a final essay and a final oral examination. Due to the current situation, lectures will most probably be held online.
成績評価方法
The evaluation is based on students' active participation in lectures, weekly assignments, a group project presentation, and a final project. The final project will be evaluated via a final essay and an oral examination, towards the end of the course.

実務経験と授業科目の関連性
Dr. Witkowski has academic and industry experience in information science and the technology industry. He is also a Board Director and Vice President of the International Society for Artificial Life, a researcher at TokyoTech in the origins of intelligence on Earth, an executive officer at the AI company XCompass, and he founded and directs Cross Labs, a research institute connected to the fundamental principles of diverse types of intelligence, and their applications for the AI industry.
