Information, Technology, and Society in Asia 224

Issues in Cultural Studies through American Studies/Pacific Studies
This course explores many of the important issues in cultural studies through the lens of Pacific Island Studies and American Studies. In particular, we will be focusing on dynamics of cultural representations--how culture is narrated and what kind of power is embedded in the making of such narratives. Particular attention will be paid to gaining better understanding of key concepts such as colonialism, empire, and gender. The readings will be selected from such journals as "American Quarterly."

Another component of this course is to discuss the meaning and method of academic writing in English. We will spend some time on the issues related to composing academic papers, including such topics such as thesis, abstract, footnotes as well as plagiarism.
