Information, Technology, and Society in Asia 201

"Introduction to Media and Communication" ITASIA 201 (Lecture/Methods)
This graduate-level introductory course provides an overview of developments and approaches to media and communication studies. The first half of the course is comprised of lectures that aim to demonstrate methodologies and approaches to media analysis. The lectures broadly cover the following four areas: journalism and democracy, mass culture and cultural studies, internet and social media, and globalization and political communication. The second half of the class will introduce approaches to social media and data analytics, including the use of the software application Tableau. All lectures and readings will be in English.

成績評価方法
1. Attendance/participation: Students are expected to attend all lectures, to read all assigned readings, and to ask questions. 2. A short oral presentation demonstrating usage of social media aggregation, web scrapping, or data analytics techniques introduced in class. 2. Final Examination: A final examination composed of short essay questions will be administered on the final day of class. The questions will cover the content of the lectures and readings.

All readings for the course will be available as PDF files from the class webpage. Use of a computer (WINDOWS or MACOS) is necessary.
