Media Practice
□Course Goals:
With the completion of this course, students will be able to: 1) comprehend the way of thinking in media studies and literacy which is interdisciplinary knowledge with a focus on media as an agent for communication, 2) bodily understand the history and theories of media studies and literacy, and 3) learn the necessary knowledge to design workshops as an academic method.

□Course Description:
This course consists of reading literature and image viewing ("Theory") and workshops ("Practice"). "Theory" will cover a wide range of topics including media history as a dynamism between information technology and the society, ideas and theories on media and communication, and media expressions and literacy necessary to cope with various problems associated with the contemporary media ecology in Japan. "Practice" will be opportunities for students to understand the above topics bodily by participating in and designing workshops as academic methodologies.
Monday classes will be for reading literature ("Theory"), and Thursday classes for workshops ("Practice"). Those two streams will be integrated and crystallized as knowledge of critical media practice in the last part of the course.

□Viewpoint of evaluation (1)Whether the student has understood basic knowledge of media literacy and workshop design. (2)Whether the student has achieved (1) in the context of the relationship with his own life and research. (3)Whether the student has actively participated in classes (workshops). □Evaluation method Contribution to the classes, performance in workshops, and mid & final reports □Evaluation criteria Attendance (40%), Performance in Workshops (40%), Mid and Final Reports (20%)
教科書
The lecturer will bring four pieces of literatures for reading on every Monday. Most of them will be short articles and essays related to the media practice.

履修上の注意
□How to prepare for this course Though depending on the number of students registered, there will be three kinds of workshops. When the number of students is small, individual activities will replace workshops. If the number of attendance is more than 25, the lecturer will discuss with the office to choose by lottery. The students need to do some home and preparatory work. □Prerequisites: (1) From the standpoint of workshop design, the size of the class should be within 25 students. If the number of attendance is more than 25, the lecturer will discuss with the office to choose by lottery. (2) Students need to attend more than eleven classes. (3) The lecturer will speak in English for lectures. In the discussion and workshops, English and partly in Japanese. (4) For the workshops, students need to bring their smartphone or mobile media.
その他
(1) The course will be the same as the course "Global Design Workshop" in the graduate school of information science and technology. (2) There will be a teaching assistant who will mainly facilitate group discussion and workshop design.
