Field Exercise on Sustainability Science
サステイナビリティ学実習
GPSS-GLI features a strong focus on "Field Exercise". It is intended to broaden the perspectives of students and cultivate an on-the-ground competency to identify and resolve problems through various activities, including preliminary surveys, site visits, experimental studies, discussions with various stakeholders (including local researchers and administrators), engagement in group work activities and result reports. This year (Academic Year 2020), this course will focus on the community development of Kashiwa-no-ha area and how to apply Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to Kashiwa-no-ha development.
The University of Tokyo has contributed to the development of Kashiwa-no-ha area in the recent 20 years with the collaboration of public sector (Kashiwa City) and private sector (Mitsui Fudousan), either by making a development master plan or by proposing several technologies. In order to discuss how to make sustainable lifestyle, city and society, Kashiwa-no-ha can give us a good learning environment.
Kashiwa-no-ha area has been developed under a master plan called “Kashiwa-no-ha International Campus Town Initiative” and has also become famous for realization of the “smart city” concept “Kashiwa-no-ha smart city project (KSCP)”. Recently, another discussion on how to apply SDGs to Kashiwa-no-ha development has risen.
In this unit, students are challenged to evaluate the current situation of the Kashiwa-no-ha development (including Kashiwa-no-ha smart city project (KSCP) , international campus town etc.), study about urban development based on SDGs concept in the world and propose how to apply SDGs to Kashiwa-no-ha development.
