Practical Economics for sustainable development
- How to change the world with business and finance
The global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate,
environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice, are not only a matter of
developing countries but also universal issues we all need to address.
The world is interconnected. “Leaving no one behind” is a slogan of SDGs adopted by
United Nations to be achieved by 2030. We cannot isolate an issue to a closed area or
a community. Then the question is, how can we accomplish this goal? What role can
business and finance play to make progress in developing our sustainable society?
The series of lectures will guide you through the practical economics of sustainable
development. You will see the historical and current progress in how the notion and
model of business and finance has been evolving along with innovation in science,
technology, and social system. Various cases will show how people have been
struggling and fighting to overcome conflicts and challenges.
The lectures and assignments will provide you chances to experience the excitements
and challenges of structuring finance, making investments, being a social entrepreneur,
and creating social impact for sustainable development. Giving opportunities to see
things from different angles is one of the essential learnings of the course.

授業の方法
The classes will be a combination of lectures and group works. Lecturers will emphasize
teaching in-depth and practical knowledge as well as facilitating the discussions and
contemplation by the students. The assignments will not only challenge the research skill
but stimulate the creativity and imagination of the students. Peer learning is recommended.
成績評価方法
The lecturers will mainly evaluate the grade by the evaluation of the assignments/reports.
Positive classroom participation and contribution in the group works will add points on the
assessment.
