<Course Description>
In this course we explore factors necessary for economic development using microeconomics theory and quantitative empirical analyses. We investigate how people make choices employing economic models and examine contemporary topics analyzed in development literature. The topics we cover include agricultural technology, agricultural household model, market competition, industrial development & clusters, human capital (education & health), credit access, and externality. In studying these topics, an emphasis is placed on the applications of the basic theories of microeconomics and econometric techniques. Through the course exercises, students are expected to develop analytical skills to read papers critically and communication skills to make logical argument to support their own ideas.
<Course Objectives>
a) To learn how microeconomic theories and quantitative empirical methods are applied to analyze the real-world development issues,
b) To develop ability to consider factors/mechanisms lying behind the existing development constraints, and
c) To learn to read an academic paper fully.
