Critical Thinking Skills - Applications & Beyond the Basics A
Critical Thinking for Academic Rigor
Critical Thinking is particularly helpful for researchers to make and justify important choices when crafting and selecting appropriate thesis questions, problem statements, hypothesis, resources, conceptual frameworks, theoretical frameworks, methodologies, findings, conclusions etc.
A Critical Thinker is somebody who consciously and conscientiously makes an effort to improve the quality of their thinking and how they can communicate (articulate) their insights and understandings regarding complex issues to others. By employing Critical Thinking methods, Critical Thinkers also believe that they can more confidently and consistently make better independent choices.
When a Critical Thinker approaches an issue they try to answer basic questions such as:
What can I do to improve the likelihood of a successful output or outcome?
What should I do to meet or exceed the standards selected for high quality output or outcome?
In this course we will seek to develop those skills necessary for thinking carefully, expressing one’s own ideas clearly, and critically evaluating the many claims and arguments that confront us daily. In addition to becoming familiar with numerous concepts, becoming a critical thinker involves understanding your internal motivation for higher quality thinking, and gaining experience applying critical thinking tools and techniques. As a discipline critical thinking involves an intimidatingly huge body of knowledge; however, habitually applying just a few basic concepts can substantially improve intellectual output and outcomes.
Although we will focus on the most basic concepts such as informal reasoning, intellectual standards, elements of reasoning, formal and informal fallacies, categorical logic, truth, deductive and inductive arguments ample time will be provided for students to pose questions that may demand changes to scheduled content. Learning objectives; however will remain the same. By the end of this course students should be able to apply basic critial thinking tools and techniques that substantially improves the quality of their thinking and how they communicate their thinking to others.
To truly inderstand the power of critical thinking you must apply it to something important to your life. You can, for example, use critical thinking when explaining the importance of your research in various contexts. Some contexts worth considering are: the value of your work to - yourslef, your professors, your field, society and other disciplines.
As much as possible during this course you will be encouraged to put critical thinking tools and techniques to work on your actual learning objectives.
