Basics for Science Communication in English

In this course you will review the main concepts of the Central Dogma of Molecular Biology (CDMB). In this course we will discuss the concepts actively in English. You will apply knowledge of the CDMB to analyze and evaluate practical scientific problems and discuss the answers in English.

Process skills, also known as soft skills or professional skills, are mentioned by employers as critical for an effective workforce. Many of these skills are also important to be successful in graduate school as well as many jobs in the “real world”. By taking this class you will improve in the following areas:

●Teamwork
●Problem solving
●Critical thinking
●Oral communication skills – specifically, by taking this class you will feel comfortable talking about basic CDMB in English to another scientist.

Although the class schedule is subject to change due to COVID-19, the current plan for the Summer 2020 is from Aug 31 (Mon) to Sep 4 (Fri). Monday: Biological Molecules and Biochemistry Basics Tuesday: Processes of the Central Dogma of Molecular Biology (CDMB) Wednesday: Solving problems in CDMB 1 Thursday: Solving problems in CDMB 2 Friday: To be determined, course summary Time: Everyday 9-11am and 1-3pm (4h/day)

●This class is taught and conducted entirely in English. ●Any homework assignments must be submitted by the deadline, or a 50% penalty may be imposed. ●If you have questions or if you do not understand something, then you must ask the professor or ask a classmate. Excuses such as “I did not know” or “I did not understand” will not be accepted. ●Any writing that you do for this class must be your own original writing. Do not copy text from other sources, including other students, as this is plagiarism. It will be dealt with stringently according to University Regulations. You will fail this course.
