Atmospheric constituents play fundamental roles in controlling the Earth’s radiation budget, atmospheric environment, air quality, and geochemical cycles, through their respective physicochemical properties. In this lecture, an overview of the roles of gaseous species and aerosols in the present atmosphere is presented. First, basics of atmospheric photochemistry, transport processes, and radiation processes are described. Stratospheric and tropospheric ozone and related radical species are described. Atmospheric aerosols (suspended particles) are also described from viewpoint of their formation/loss mechanisms and impacts on radiation and cloud microphysics. Finally, recent changes in atmospheric environment induced by human activities are described.
