This lecture covers selected four topics, which are cosmic rays, gravitational wave, neutrino, and dark matter, in the latest developments of astroparticle physics by the experts of each topic.
1) Cosmic rays
Cosmic rays were discovered back in 1912. Now we know that cosmic rays are composed mainly of nuclei of hydrogen, etc. The energy spectrum of cosmic rays is expressed as power-law, ranging from 10^{9} eV to 10^{20} eV. There is a consensus that cosmic rays below 10^{15} eV are of galactic origin and those above 10^{18} eV are of extragalactic origin. In this lecture, the origin, acceleration mechanism, propagation mechanism of galactic cosmic rays will be outlined and then some recent observational results will be introduced.
2) Gravitational wave
Since the first observation in 2015, the observation of gravitational waves has been developed significantly. By September 2019, 50 gravitational wave events have been reported. In the case of binary neutron star merger in 2017, it was observed not only by gravitational waves, but also by many astronomical observatories in all wavelength of electromagnetic waves. This means that gravitational waves become an important tool in astronomy. This lecture explains physics and astrophysics which are expected to be revealed by gravitational wave observations, detection methods and analysis methods of gravitational waves.
3) Neutrino
Neutrinos are produced by nuclear fusion reactions in the core of the Sun and by supernova explosions. In addition, interactions of cosmic rays in the atmosphere produce neutrinos. Observations of those neutrinos established that neutrinos have masses and different flavors of neutrinos mix, and neutrinos oscillate while they travel long distances. This lecture explains how we can investigate inside the stars.
4) Dark matter
It is a striking fact that the nature of the 85% of the matter in the universe is unknown. Identification of dark matter is one of exciting issues in modern particle physics and astrophysics. Researchers are looking for clues in various observations of the universe and astronomical objects, particle physics experiments, and precise measurements in physical quantity. If dark matter is an unknown elementary particle, its discovery would solve many of mysteries of the universe and pave the way for a deeper understanding of the elementary particle physics. This lecture explains the history of dark matter, various observations, measurements, and direct detection of dark matter interactions toward the identification of dark matter.
